The Hermosa Beach Education Foundation reached its $1 million fundraising goal and recently named a new president.

Carol Kluthe, former head of HBEF’s Annual Giving, the group’s annual fundraising campaign, will replace Carla Persell, who spent two years as president. During its past fiscal year, from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018, the nonprofit raised $1 million.

“Thanks to our generous Hermosa families, friends, local businesses and beloved community, in addition to too many volunteers to name, we can proudly say that HBEF reached its $1 million fundraising goal,” said Persell in a statement. “You often hear that it takes a village, but you also need a shared commitment to making our schools and its programs the best possible. Together, we did that this year and will continue to under the leadership of Carol Kluthe.”

Of the $1 million raised, $590,000 came from annual giving, $280,000 from its biggest fundraiser Hearts of Hermosa, $146,000 from Skechers Pier to Pier Walk and another $130,000 from various sponsors.

“We have some very involved parents and community members that see the benefit to all of our kids for raising that kind of money and be able to do these kind of programs,” Kluthe said. “I have to say that I found it really inspiring this year and just so amazing the community and parent involvement this year. I think everyone came together… to reach that goal.”

Kluthe said this week she wants to keep the momentum going after a sold out Hearts of Hermosa and the success of the first fall Annual Giving campaign, new promotion video and HBEF Punch Card that offers discounts from local businesses.

Money raised by HBEF funds everything from middle school electives to physical education to music. This year, Hermosa Valley was named a 2018 California Distinguished School and the California Department of Education honored Valley for exemplary physical education, which is a program funded by HBEF.

Kluthe said surveys will be sent out to parents next week to gauge what their priorities might be for the next school year.
